On Monday, socialist autoworker Will Lehman distributed hundreds of copies of a letter to delegates at the UAW’s Big Three bargaining convention at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit. At the convention, delegates voted down by a 2-to-1 margin a resolution asking the UAW to go on record supporting a call for including a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in the contract.
The convention takes place amid an unprecedented crisis in the UAW bureaucracy, as Shawn Fain was elected after winning the votes of just 3 percent of the rank and file in an election tainted by widespread voter suppression in the first round and apathy in the second.
At the convention, several delegates who spoke to the World Socialist Web Site acknowledged that turnout was “terrible” and “embarrassing.” This is a video of Lehman reading this letter.
