Last week’s crackdowns at University of California Santa Cruz and at Wayne State University in Detroit pose more sharply than ever the need for the working class to emerge as the center of the fight against war. These attacks are a warning that the White House and both pro-war parties will not back down in the slightest to popular opposition.

The decision to send police to these campuses underscores the role of the UAW bureaucracy, which backs “Genocide Joe” Biden. There is enormous potential support among autoworkers, who hate war and are also fighting against mass layoffs which the UAW is helping to enforce. But a fight connecting opposition to layoffs with the fight against genocide requires a rank-and-file rebellion against the pro-corporate union apparatus.

The working class, which creates society’s wealth, must intervene to force an end to the genocide and the attack on free speech, including through industrial action to halt the shipment of supplies and weapons to Israel. Workers in Detroit, the center of the US auto industry, must join forces with academic workers in the United Auto Workers on strike against the police attacks on campuses across the University of California system.
